"His leadership contributed to the development of professional
standards, strategic priorities, and programs that continue to benefit NRPA members, agencies and universities across the country today. He was known to many of us as the 'Father of Accreditation and Professional
Certification'."
~Jodie Adams, Retired Director at Springfield-Greene County Park Board and NRPA Past President

Dr. Donald D. Henkel was a transformative leader whose visionary work shaped the modern foundation of the park and recreation profession. Known affectionately as the "Father of Accreditation and Professional Certification," Henkel dedicated over two decades as Director of Professional Services for the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), where he elevated professional standards nationwide.

A graduate of Indiana University, George Williams College, and the University of Illinois, Henkel brought deep academic and practical insight to his national leadership. His most enduring achievements include spearheading the NRPA Council on Accreditation to earn official recognition from the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation—the first time a higher education body recognized park and recreation curricula. Additionally, Henkel orchestrated the development of the NRPA National Certification Board and established a national professional certification program.

For years, Henkel directed the annual NRPA Congress, pioneering Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and curating forward-thinking programming that turned the gathering into an engine for innovation and professional growth. Honored with the NRPA National Distinguished Professional Award in 1990, he remained a humble advocate for meaningful change, never seeking personal recognition.

Dr. Henkel’s relentless pursuit of excellence, mentorship of future leaders, and establishment of rigorous academic and professional credentials leave a powerful, permanent legacy that continues to guide and elevate the recreation and park movement today.
